What is Kombucha?

Kombucha is a fermented tea that contains a symbiotic culture of acetic acid bacteria and yeast, known as SCOBY. The tea goes through a fermentation process that gives it a carbonated, vinegary, and sour flavor. Kombucha enthusiasts claim that the good bacteria created by the fermentation can help improve gut health, reduce stress, and even lead to weight loss.

How Is Kombucha made ?

Kombucha is made by dissolving sugar in non chlorinated boiling water. Tea leaves are added to the boiling water, then discarded when the tea cools. SCOBY is added to the cooled sweetened tea. SCOBY resembles a rubbery, slimy blob, not something that should be added to a beverage !

The mixture is then poured into a sterilized beaker along with previously fermented kombucha tea to lower the pH. The container is covered with a paper towel or breathable fabric to prevent insects such as fruit flies from contaminating the kombucha. The tea is left to ferment at room temperature for 10 to 14 days .

The tea is left to ferment for a period of up to 10 to 14 days at room temperature (18°C to 26°C). A new “daughter” SCOBY will form on the surface of the tea to the diameter of the container. After fermentation is completed, the SCOBY is removed and stored along with a small amount of the newly fermented tea. The remaining kombucha is strained and bottled for a secondary ferment for a few days or stored at a temperature of 4 ℃.

Proponents of kombucha have made many claims about the health benefits of the fermented beverage. Some of the health claims are :

  • Gut Health
  • Improved Mental State
  • Aids Weight Loss

Gut Health

One of the most common claims among commercially sold kombucha brands is that it can help increase good gut bacteria, leading to improved digestion and overall better health. Others have made claims that suggest that kombucha has properties that cure asthma, diabetes, gout, and even cancer.

Currently, there is not much scientific evidence that supports a direct link between kombucha consumption and improved overall health. There is evidence that the cultures in kombucha can act similarly to probiotics. Some persons who have suffered from digestive issues have received relief after drinking kombucha.

Improved Mental State

Because of the high level of B vitamins present in kombucha, it could help to improve your mental state. B12 is known to increase energy levels and to help with mental focus.

Aids Weight Loss

Fans of kombucha believe that there is a strong correlation between a healthy gut and an overall healthy weight. Because proper digestion can reduce cravings, you will naturally eat smaller amounts of unhealthy foods, replacing them with healthy food choices. When your digestion is working properly, you will have more energy and be more likely to exercise. It also helps with nutrient absorption, keeping you more mentally aware and helping you take advantage of increased stamina.

There are claims that the acetic acids produced by kombucha help to regulate blood sugar levels. Having the proper blood sugar levels can help you to regain lost energy and keep many other health factors in check. When your blood sugar is at an optimal level, you can burn fat more efficiently and take advantage of the nutrients that are in your system.

What are kombucha side effects?

https://www.pexels.com/@geraud-pfeiffer/

There have been a handful of adverse effects reported in relation to kombucha consumption, but they are generally isolated and mild. A few of these adverse side affects are :

  • Alcohol Buzz
  • Lowered Blood Sugar
  • Yeast Infection
  • Acidosis
  • Liver Damage

Alcohol Buzz

Kombucha contains some alcohol, so if you have a low tolerance, you may experience the effects that you would receive from having a cocktail. Generally, this won’t happen with store-bought kombucha as the percentage is less than .05, but it could happen with stronger, home-brewed products

Lowered Blood Sugar

Kombucha may be harmful for people with diabetes, contributing to low blood sugar levels, so it is important to monitor this if you have diabetes and drink kombucha.

Yeast Infection

For those who suffer from candida, kombucha may be better avoided due to its high levels of yeast. Although it can help with digestion, it may contribute to an increased likelihood of a yeast infection.

Acidosis

In some cases, people have suffered from acidosis, which is a condition when there is an abnormally high amount of acid in the body. If left untreated, the condition can be fatal.

Liver Damage

A few rare cases have resulted in liver damage. This is more likely if you are an alcoholic or if you have a weakened immune system. The tea can support the growth of certain bacteria and fungi that can lead to infections if your body is unable to deal with them.

Final Thoughts

Final thoughts , should you drink kombucha? Many people enjoy the flavor and carbonated mouth feel of kombucha, and most evidence suggests that it is not likely to harm you. However, you shouldn’t rely on the drink to heal any specific ailments you may have, as there is no proof that it is really a miracle worker. If you enjoy kombucha, you should have no problem with consuming it in moderation. Some people may feel better after drinking it, but there are a few who experience adverse side effects. Before embarking on a new health regimen, its best to conduct your own research and consult your primary health provider.
